Dang I just noticed I capped the voltage at 1093 in the legacy 41 bios, so I can't test out the VDDC right now. 1162 will be interesting as I rarely run it this high

LOL the swearing made the video funny.  If you have these R9 series GPUs with the stupid BIOS, we will see new levels of science and engineering in complex fan arrays designed to run the GPUs hardcore while keeping them under 75 C.

Hi,

My vapor-x r9 280x that I had just bought about 3 weeks about have presumably newer bios.
GPU-Z indicated that my card is  015.042.00.001.000000 (113-2104XTLBG6A-V43).

Note the Bios is 015.042

Release date is Oct 8, 2013, if that is relevant.
This is when the button on the card is not pressed.

My hashrate is max 737kH/s at 80C.
Normally it stables at 700-710kH/s.

Can my card be flashed to the 039 bios? I can't seem to find any other people with the same bios version as mine.

Thanks~

Backup your bios and post it here (for others and to be safe), check the thread as it contains other bios versions.

Is it possible to revert to an older bios??
I thought it was impossible?

Will post the bios later.

tldr: Yes

I think the latest batch (with 015.041 BIOS) of this card cannot be flashed to 015.039 BIOS.

I just got my Vapor-X's; I did not know about these problems when I ordered them few weeks ago... But I wanted to ask that in which kind of setup are you running your Vapors? I mean; are they directly in motherboard in a case without any additional cooling, or are you using a separate rig with risers & some additional fans for them? For what I have understood, difference in temperature between these setups can many tens of degrees. So I was just thinking that can this problem be solved with risers & large fans in a rig?

As per my results with flashing all the bioses, the limitation is just what VRAM the vbios image supports and what is present on your gpu.

As the techpowerup vbioses are mostly hynix it don't work. So long as Elpida is supported (as well) you should do fine.

I just get the feeling people  actually read the thread before posting and not just skimming, but hey we are only human and not perfect. As there answers could be addressed quite easily if they actually read the thread. So its somewhat frustrating.

I want to join this topic since I own 3x R9 280X Sapphire Vapour-X purchased in late december 2013. All configs I've tried (including from this topic) gives low kH/s in range 400-570. However I've managed to obtain quite stable 700-704kH/s for each card.

Settings I'm running now:

--gpu-engine 1080 --gpu-memclock 1500 -I 20 -g 1 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 24000 --gpu-powertune -20 --temp-target 70 --auto-fan

All 3 cards gives the same kH, however, gpu's are 68,68,75C  and fans: 50,71,100%, respectively.

I don't know how to check bios version or VRM temp because I'm running my rig on Debian (anyone knows?). Also don't know if I have elpida or hynix on cards.

+1 for targosh's question!

How can you view GPU bios version on linux OS? This would be greatly appreciated, just to have that factual information of, "Yes, I have the shitty bios version (.041)."

Okay after much experimentation with the 2 Vapor-x cards that I also received mid December.  The best Ive been able to maintain with any stability is

gpu-engine 1050
gpu-memclock 1500
intensity 13
gpu-threads 2
worksize 256
thread-concurrency 11200
gpu-powertune 0

I turned off auto-fan and just let the cards manage cooling themselves, and they seem to maintain pretty well at ~53-56C.

This gets me around 740kH/s peak once the clock settles.

I hope this helps someone as I was at many points during tuning tempted to make both cards part of my garage wall and managed to brick one PSU in the process.
Fortunately the PSU came back a little but only powers one card and fails if I push the second one above Intensity 10.

And both cards are stock 015.041 vbios

It would be interesting to see the 042 bios. Appreciate it if you could backup a copy and share (both legacy and UEFI)
039 bios is for hynix and would most likely don't work if you have Elpida vram

Then again if its Elpida vram, I think thats quite good performance my Hynix max out at 751.

I just received my cheap industrial size aluminum heatsink which I slapped to the back of the back plate. It does lowers the temp a bit but not improve the performance

anyone here have the latest uefi bios for r9-280x with hynix ram? latest bios version i could find for this card is 040 (http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?architecture=ATI&manufacturer=Sapphire&model=R+280X&interface=&memType=&memSize=) but it looks like it's only the legacy version.

Can anyone specify if it's possible to check BIOS version on Debian (or any Linux OS) ?? If yes, then how to do it? I can't find out that using google :P.

I understand that if wanna check what vram I have I need to look on board? Other option would be to read in bios? I suppose that I have this  015.042 bios version.

Yesterday I've changed fan managment i.e. removed --auto-fan --gpu-fan 50-100 and set --temp-target 75. This seems better for cards because kH/s are more stable and WU values increased about 5% so now I have about 92% work utility (with significantly better stability). Fans are now 50,50,100% and temp 63,75,76C.

I really would like to get more from this cards :P
