Title: [ANN] [ALPHA] LiteVault - A wallet similar to blockchain.info for Litecoin
Post by: Someguy123 on January 03, 2015, 05:03:57 AM
LiteVault - Trustless, secure, no lock-ins

Litevault is a service which uses encrypted wallet storage on our servers, while your private keys are only ever kept in your browser. This is the exact same technology the well known Blockchain.info uses, re-made for Litecoin by myself, Someguy123.

The service is currently in alpha and is expected to be highly buggy, please do not use it for storing or sending large amounts of Litecoin just yet, however you are in control of your private keys at all times, so the risk is low.

Donations:
LTC: LNWEjx3DKSAWKX5fkWfCwa2tWSQeo7ZmnR
BTC: 17PPTHmS8N34KYKdDc4Gn1psabteGS8EE3

A message to the community - Please read
Litecoin has been waiting for a wallet like this for a long time, I would hope people donate to the donation address - I've put in over 100 hours of work into the service just this week on my own time, there has been no fund raiser, or direct funding from any organization, so I ask that the community donate even just $1, the service will not be making money through ads or "premium features", and because it is a trustless wallet, I cannot take any service transaction fees in any way, so the community needs to help keep it alive. I can't spend this much time on the service if nobody puts money into it.

Sadly it took a ridiculous amount of effort to build this thing, and it's going to take effort to maintain it. I have my doubts that very few people are going to donate to the service, making my time better spent elsewhere :(.

Hey, great wallet. Thanks a lot.
I had a little 'bug': if you try to login, the password is plaintext.
Edit: Tried it again, I cannot replicate the bug.

Throw some Litecoin related ads on there , I'm sure you'll make enough to keep the site running and then some. Also incorporate a gambling site into the wallet , like how you could play Satoshi Dice in Blockchain.info, with a nice gui this site has huge potential.

Page doesn't load...is it working for someone else?

Main site loads fine , check here http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

Hey,

another bug: if you delete some addresses, they are seen in the 'send from address' select box. It's fixed if you relog.
And a question: is it possible to reconstruct all keys with the shared_key from the export file?

Can confirm no downtime at that point AFAIK. It's definitely working over here.

As for advertising, I have to be careful to only do first-party ads, i.e. people pay me directly for advertising with an IMAGE. If I put CoinURL ads on the site, it puts users at risk, as they could inject javascript into the page and steal peoples wallet funds. As for gambling, I guess if a gambling site wanted to sponsor me, then I'd be happy to do that, I could run my own gambling site, but that requires a large investment to start it up.

Bug fixed, try now.
As for the shared key, it's slightly misleading, we don't store your password in any way, and never send it to the server; so the "shared key" is a random password generated when you first create your wallet, stored on the server, and in your encrypted wallet. It acts as a write-only password. It's how we know you actually own your wallet when your browser wants to overwrite it with a new copy, or change any account settings.

Instant-e does absolutely no SEO and is at the top of the results. I've updated the title of the home page to "LiteVault - Secure Online Web Wallet" which should help get us to the top of that list quickly. I would set up meta tags and other things, but I've found that to be anti-productive with Google's changes in the past few years, sites that try the least for SEO, end up on top.

EDIT: Added Litevault to my webmasters account and submitted the site to indexing, they've already scanned my site, so it should end up on Google rather quickly

Update: adjusted my server configs so everything redirects properly to https://www.

Also set up HTTP Strict Transport Security (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Security/HTTP_strict_transport_security) which prevents users being downgraded to http:// on insecure networks.

I'm interested in using this site, I believe it will be very popular because everyone's been looking for this for years (only with real security like you've done).

Is it currently not working? I received my identifier after establishing my password and it just gets stuck on the login page.

Once it's starts clicking this will be awesome, I like using .info.

Sorry about that, check my previous post. I rolled out a new feature without testing it thoroughly enough, causing the site to break for some users. Rolled back and it should be working now, try shift-refresh if it doesn't.

We need a web wallet like this for litecoin , too many people keep falling for that instant-e.com scam. Great work someguy!!

Sadly it took a ridiculous amount of effort to build this thing, and it's going to take effort to maintain it. I have my doubts that very few people are going to donate to the service, making my time better spent elsewhere :(.

What is the cost of running a site lite like this? In other words, what amount of donations do you need to receive to keep this site up and running / worth your time?

The dedicated server is around $60/mo, this may change as the site grows. Virtual servers are not an option (unless they're hosted on my own dedicated servers) for security reasons.
At least a few $100 a month would ensure my attention is kept to the project, but be aware that most developers spending this much time on a project for their company would be paid much more than that.

The amount of money I'm wanting to see isn't much, and if every person who viewed this thread donated just $1, I would have over $1000 in donations. Some people have been kind enough to donate recently, and it's getting close to pay off a month of my dedicated server, but I feel it might be a long time before I get enough donations to compensate the time I'm spending on this.

People are less likely to donate when Litecoin is tanking , that's why you should look into ads and integration with a gambling site.

The site will go offline for a few minutes at 2014-01-05 7:30 PM GMT (2:30PM EST) for a planned server migration. It may take up to an hour or longer for the DNS changes to take affect, however for most users, the site should be back online within 5-10 minutes.

Alert placed on website to inform users.

I'll go through and try to improve my SEO, honestly it's probably just going to take time, too many places link to instant-e giving them a high search position.

Also UPDATE: Server crashed last night, apparently the supervisor script I used, "nodemon" doesn't auto-restart on crash, only on file changes. Changed monitoring script to ForeverJS so this shouldn't happen again.

If anyone knows why Litevault is still hard to find on Google (search litecoin web wallet, or litecoin online wallet, you won't find Litevault), please let me know ASAP. Every SEO site says it's all pretty much fine.

UPDATE: Added privacy policy, footer, fixed nav so the correct page looks active.

EDIT: Apparently for "twitter cards" (which I set up yesterday or the day before), I have to submit my URL for whitelisting (why did nowhere tell me this). This might help Litevault look a little more legitimate when people tweet about it:

EDIT 2: Looks like twitter are fast. Approved within like 2-3 minutes

I noticed my site's Google rankings increase as I searched for the name of my site and clicked and as new content kept coming.  It seems like you're at 8 (the about page) when I search for "litevault."  Hopefully in a week you'll be #1 (no reason bitvault and articles about your site but not your site come up before your site other than site age).

That's what I was thinking. I guess as more sites link to it, and give it a little time, then hopefully my service should start appearing properly ranked.

UPDATE: Tor users now get a warning if they access the site on Clearnet. Litevault now has a Hidden Service (read more at https://www.litevault.net/about/hidden-service).

This is to deal with the issue presented by Blockchain.info: http://dcmagnates.com/multiple-blockchain-info-wallets-hacked-onion-mirror-url-set-up-for-tor-users/

I hope LiteVault proves to be a secure online wallet. Once LTC/BTC aren't stolen from owner accounts, the sooner LTC/BTC will skyrocket in value.

Thank you very much! I was waiting for something like this for a long time. Going to try this now! I hope this stay! Why don't you ask for funds from larger companies and putting a small banner like Blockchain.info does(Under 'Partners - not ads')?

P.S. It would be good if you make Reddit post link for Reddit and Litecointalk thread link for Litecointalk. Now for both, there is only a Reddit link. :)

Thanks for the kind donation, every little helps :)

Links have been adjusted as you suggested.

As for small banners from "partners", that might work. It depends on how the community feels about them, and what companies would even want to become a partner.

UPDATE: I'm still working on Litevault. Currently making some very large changes so the update may not be out for a few days.

The update will include better wallet encryption, 2 Factor Authentication, reliability improvements, and a lot of behind-the-scenes changes to improve the quality of the server code.

UPDATE: 2-Factor authentication is now live.

I need people to beta test this to get any problems out, I haven't noticed any in the past few days.

Set an email in your account, and use Google Authenticator or Authy. We ask for 2FA once a week if you mark the computer as trusted, or once every 2 hours if not.

UPDATE: There was a bug when setting up 2FA for the first time. Surprisingly the feature has been live but broken for nearly 2 weeks, but only just now I've gotten reports.

2FA is now confirmed working, apologies to anyone else who got a database error when trying to set up 2-Factor.

Hey homie, trying to contact you here. The site doesn't want to send coins. Is this issue known? It functioned fine yesterday afternoon, then would not yesterday evening.

Peace, NLC

@NattyLightCoin

Check your emails, I've replied to that.

I'm unable to confirm any issue over here. It seems to be sending coins okay here.

Apologies for the slow reply, I've been away for the past week.

Loving the new design and good seeing progress on this project.

On a side note: <div class="container"></div> is empty on https://www.litevault.net/privacy and thus the margins are not added to that page.

EDIT: Fixed. Thanks  :D

A bug with sending coins has been fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience, I've received emails from several people about it, and because it's a condition only triggered by certain numbers, I wasn't able to reproduce it, but was able to discover the root cause by looking at the console log that a user sent me (thanks Brad :) ).

TECHNICAL INFO:
It involved issues with dividing satoshi's where some cases caused fractional satoshi's e.g. 0.001 / 0.001 would become 100000 / 100000 = 49999.999999 (because everything is a float in javascript, some numbers become fractional when divided), inducing errors in BitcoinJS which caused silent errors when people tried to send their coins.

Really nice online wallet. You did an excellent job...  I am impressed, you must be an accomplished programmer.

I was expecting a litecoin payment, so I go to open my local LTC wallet and of course the database is corrupt and it has to re-download the blockchain.  UGH    I thought, I need a good online wallet I can import my addresses to.  A quick google search brought me to your site.
